Children taking part in a small group primary maths tutoring session with qualified teacher Carrie Perrett in Ampthill.

WHO THIS IS FOR

For children who need more than extra homework

When learning feels difficult, your child may need clearer explanation, more time to revisit tricky areas and encouragement to feel confident trying again. That is what my sessions are designed to provide.

WHAT I CAN HELP WITH

Four areas where I make a real difference

Maths confidence and understanding

Number skills, problem-solving, reasoning and core maths foundations — using the Mastery approach so understanding runs deep.

English skills and confidence

Reading, writing, comprehension, grammar and the key English skills children need to feel more secure and capable in school.

Learning gaps

Focused support for concepts that have been missed, misunderstood or not fully secured — finding the step where things stopped making sense and starting there.

Classroom confidence

Encouragement for children who have stopped putting their hand up, feel anxious about being wrong, or need to feel capable before they can engage.

WHY SMALL GROUPS WORK

I keep my groups small on purpose

Up to four children per group — carefully matched by confidence, level and learning need. That's not just a selling point. It's the reason this works.

Children in a small, settled group feel less exposed than they do in a classroom. They ask more questions. They're more willing to try. And the shared experience of working through something together is genuinely motivating for primary-age children.

But the group is small enough that I can still give each child proper teacher attention — spotting when someone is lost, noticing when someone is ready to move on, and adjusting in the moment.

Focused teacher attention

Maximum four children means I can truly see each child in every session.

Carefully matched

I group children by confidence and level — not just age. The right group makes a real difference.

Safe to ask questions

Small groups feel less exposing. Children ask more, try more, and learn more when they feel safe.

Shared learning

The quiet encouragement of learning alongside peers is something one-to-one tutoring can't replicate.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What a typical session feels like

Each session is calm, structured and purposeful. I encourage children to ask questions, talk through their thinking and practise in a way that feels manageable — never rushed, never overwhelming.

Sessions take place in my dedicated tutoring space in Ampthill — a calm, settled environment that feels consistent and safe every week.

A typical session includes:

  • A calm welcome — children settle in, any questions from the week are addressed before we begin.

  • A clear focus — each session has a specific aim so children always know what they're working towards.

  • Teacher-led explanation — I introduce or revisit the concept clearly and at the right pace for the group.

  • Guided group practice — children work through examples together with my support throughout.

  • Time to revisit — space to go back over anything that hasn't quite landed before we move on.

  • Encouragement and next steps — children leave knowing what they've achieved and what comes next.

All of this is confirmed during the enquiry stage. I won't place your child in a group until I'm confident it's the right fit.
