MEET CARRIE • QUALIFIED PRIMARY TEACHER IN AMPTHILL
I believe every child can find their confidence
I’m Carrie - a qualified primary teach who spent over ten years in the classroom, latterly leading English and Maths. Along the way I became fascinated by how children learn, and why confidence so often unlocks the rest. Now I bring all of that to one child at a time.
Qualified primary teacher · 10+ years in the classroom · School leader for English & Maths · Specialist in how children learn.
MY JOURNEY
From Brownie leader to classroom teacher — a path shaped by children
My journey
From classroom teacher to educational founder — a path shaped by children
The beginning · UK
An early spark in my own primary school
My path began with work experience in my own primary school, where I first realised how much I loved helping children learn. That early spark stayed with me throughout my degree and shaped the rest of my career.
Italy
Theatre education — where teaching found me
Immediately after graduating, I joined a theatre education company in Italy, performing and running interactive workshops. While I loved the performance aspect, the teaching was where I found my real energy — it showed me how powerful active, creative engagement is in helping children grasp new concepts quickly and confidently.
Japan
Becoming the student again
Moving to Japan without knowing a word of the language was a turning point. Having struggled with languages at school, I'd arrived firmly believing I simply "wasn't a language learner" — and being a complete beginner completely rewrote that mindset. I had to get comfortable with making mistakes and learn to celebrate very small victories. It taught me deep empathy for my students: when a child struggles, it is rarely a lack of ability — it is usually about the beliefs they have built up about themselves. That understanding has been at the heart of my teaching ever since.
UK · The classroom
10+ years as a primary teacher and school leader
Back in the UK, I threw myself into teaching and professional development — particularly around neuroscience and how children process learning. As a school leader for both English and Maths, I spent years listening to children talk about how they feel about their subjects. What a child believes about their own ability has a profound impact on their actual outcomes.
Specialist support · SEND
Special Educational Needs and mainstream leadership
Alongside my classroom and leadership work, I have specialised in supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Working with children who had lost faith in the mainstream system required exceptional trust, patience, and highly bespoke lesson design. It confirmed what I know to be true: every child is capable of thriving when we adapt the environment and the approach to suit them.
Ampthill · Today
Creating Ampthill Bright Start
Too often, I watched children lose confidence and fall into a self-fulfilling prophecy of thinking, "I'm just bad at this." I created Ampthill Bright Start to be the safe space those children deserve — where gaps are filled, mistakes are celebrated, and confidence is restored.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERTISE
What I bring to every session
Qualified primary teacher
Formally trained and with over 10 years in the classroom. I know exactly what your child needs to master now — and what they'll face next.
School leader: English & Maths
Deep subject expertise and a thorough understanding of the National Curriculum across both core subjects at primary level.
Specialist in how children learn
Deeply invested in neuroscience and learning psychology. I understand how mindset and self-belief shape a child's academic outcomes.
International teaching experience
Teaching and learning in Italy and Japan gave me a uniquely broad perspective on education — and a deep respect for how differently children can thrive.
AMPTHILL BRIGHT START TODAY
I set up Ampthill Bright Start to bring this range of experience back to my own community.
When a child arrives convinced they "can't" do maths or English, I see a reflection of myself struggling with languages years ago—and I know exactly how to guide them past that barrier. I have built a warm, focused space where academic gaps are filled, mistakes are welcomed as part of the learning process, and true confidence is restored.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
A little more about me
When I’m not tutoring, you’ll usually find me with my nose in a book, on the yoga mat, or trying to keep my Japanese from getting too rusty. I believe a well-rounded life makes a better teacher — and I bring the same curiosity to everything I do.
