Frequently Asked Questions
Questions parents often ask before getting started
Choosing extra support for your child is an important decision, and it's natural to have questions. Below are the answers to the things parents ask most often. If you can't find what you're looking for, I'm always happy to help.
About the sessions
-
No. Some children come because school has identified gaps. Others come because they need more confidence, clearer explanation or more time to secure key concepts. If you're unsure, just get in touch and we can talk it through.
-
I support children aged 7–11, usually across Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.
-
Key Stage 2 maths and English.
-
I keep groups small — a maximum of four children. A minimum of two pupils is required for a group to run.
-
Children are grouped by confidence, current level and learning need — not simply age. I'd rather wait for the right match than put your child in a group that isn't quite right for them.
-
Sessions are calm, structured and purposeful. I encourage children to ask questions, talk through their thinking and practise in a way that feels manageable — never rushed or overwhelming.
Booking & Payment
-
Yes — but not a formal test. Once I'm confident Ampthill Bright Start could be the right fit, I'll invite your child to an initial discovery session. It's a relaxed, one-hour meeting where we work through some activities together, so I can understand their strengths, spot any gaps and get to know them a little. Afterwards, I write up a full report and email it to you.
-
At this stage, the first step is to complete the enquiry form. This helps me understand your child's needs before confirming whether there's a suitable group available.
-
Initial discovery session costs £50
Sessions are £30 per child, per lesson.
1:1 sessions (prior to entering a group) costs £50.
-
Fees are invoiced and payable half-termly in advance to secure your child's place in their group.
-
Each session lasts 60 minutes.
-
That's completely normal. You're welcome to get in touch and share what's happening. The enquiry stage helps identify whether tutoring may be the right next step — and whether I'm the right fit.
Location & Safety
-
Sessions take place in a dedicated tutoring space within my home in Ampthill. The full address is shared privately once the next step has been agreed.
-
Yes. I hold a current Enhanced DBS Certificate for the Child Workforce and am registered with the DBS Update Service. The original certificate can be viewed during the discovery stage.
-
I follow clear safeguarding procedures and professional boundaries. Children are supervised throughout every session and released only to authorised adults. All communication about students takes place through parents or carers.
